Mengenal Leonard Bloomfield (1877 – 1949)

Leonard Bloomfield   (1877 – 1949) Leonard Bloomfield was born on April 1, 1887 in Chicago. Bloomfield attended from Harvard University (B.A.1906), the University of Wisconsin (1906-08), the University of Chicago (Ph.D 1909), the University of Leipzig (1913-14), and the University of Göttingen (1914). Bloomfield was an instructor of German at the University of Cincinnati from 1909 to 1910 and at the University of Illinois from 1910 to 1913. He was an Assistant Professor for comparative linguistics and German at the University of Illinois from 1913 until 1921, and an Assistant Professor of German at Ohio State University, Columbus from 1921 to 1927. He was professor at the University of Chicago from 1927 to 1940 and became Chairman of the Department of Linguistics, which was started in 1933.   Language Contact   Thomason (2001 : 1 ) argues that language contact is an even when the speakers use more than one language in the same time. The uses of this language does not requires the speakers to speak fluently   as bilingual or multilingual, but the communication between speakers of two different language were already categorized as events of language contact.   The result of such contact differ according to several factors, including the length and intensity of contact between the groups, the types of social, economic and political relationship between them, the function which communication between them must serve and the degree of similarity between the languages they speak.            Sociolinguistics as the study of language in relation to society . It is a part of the overall study of language, linguistics and that linguistics differs from sociolinguistic in only taking into account the structure of language to the exclusion of the social contexts in which it is learned and used. In particular, sociolinguistics allows the beginning of an analytical frame-work to be worked out, containing   terms such as language ( a body of knowledge or rules ), speech ( actual utterances ), speaker, addressee, topic and so on.
